Zoology
Animals look more like us than all the other creatures on this planet. They have eyes and a mouth. Most of them make sound to communicate. They can move around. And they produce offspring. Their digestive system is similar to our own and they seem to express their emotions in a way we can relate to.
Botanical gardens are lovely places, but the Zoo gives us more or less the feeling we can interact with the creatures on display.
In the wild we love watching birds or other animals. I think our hunting instinct gets triggered when watching wildlife. We don’t have to shoot it with a bow and arrow anymore. But catching it with our eyes or camera gives us the same sense of victory. And although it is cool to discover a rare plant in my own tiny forrest in my backyard, even I find it way cooler to see a rare bird or rodent. And I think this is because the plant will still be there tomorrow or even in a week or so. But the bird disappears in a split second. And I was lucky to see it in that one second it sat on that branch.
And I feel even luckier if they give me the chance to draw them, even if it is just a quick sketch that I can work out later on in my studio.
